If you need a excuse to eat cake today then do it for WordPress because the world’s favourite Content Management System (CMS) has just turned 22!
That’s right, the world’s most popular CMS has been powering tons of websites on the internet for more than two decades. Whether you’re a blogger, business owner, or just someone who likes to tinker with websites, the chances are that you’ve probably crossed paths with this legendary CMS.
Once Upon a Time in 2003…
Back on 27th May, 2003. Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, two web enthusiasts, decided the world needed a better way to publish online. Forking the b2/cafelog platform (Which morphed into b2evolution) the two chaps grew the derivative blogging platform into WordPress.
Back then, it was all about clean templates, better typography, and a no-fuss admin dashboard. It was a blog platform for bloggers, other than Blogger itself, which was acquired by Google. Early WordPress was a very textual affair as I remember.
Fast forward to today, and WordPress has become an absolute powerhouse of a CMS.
From Blogger’s Best Friend to Digital Powerhouse
In the early days, WordPress was the go-to for bloggers (I’ll admit, I was flirting with Joomla at the time, but WordPress had my blogging heart). But by 2005, things got interesting: themes arrived, the admin got a makeover, and the plugin system opened the door to endless customisation.
Between 2006 and 2010, WordPress really hit its stride. With the trademark secured, the admin experience overhauled, and features that made both newbies and pros alike very happy. With one-click updates and the built-in plugin installer, WordPress really came of age.
WordPress Milestones: A Greatest Hits Playlist
Let’s take a quick tour through some of WordPress’s biggest moments:
- 2003: WordPress 0.7 launches (the OG version!).
- 2004: Plugins arrive, unlocking a world of add-ons.
- 2005: Themes and a shiny new admin interface debut.
- 2008: Admin gets a major redesign an it’s SO much easier on the eyes.
- 2012-2015: Responsive design, a slick media manager, and the REST API make WordPress more versatile than ever.
- 2018: The Gutenberg block editor lands, making drag-and-drop site building a breeze. Many purists hate it.
- 2023-2025: Full Site Editing comes out of beta, performance gets a boost, and WordPress keeps leading the pack.
(We’ll skip over last year’s drama with WPEngine—let’s keep things positive!)
Why WordPress Still Rules the Web
So, why do we—and millions of others—still love WordPress after all these years? Here’s the secret sauce:
- Easy Setup: Most hosts offer one-click installs, daily backups, and built-in security.
- Customisation Galore: Thousands of themes (free and premium), plus custom options for that one-of-a-kind look.
- SEO Superpowers: Out-of-the-box SEO is capable, but with plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math it’s even easier to SEO WordPress.
- Plugin Paradise: There are something like 59,000 free plugins for everything from ecommerce (hello, WooCommerce) to analytics and beyond.
- Open Source: Free to use, built on trusty tech, and supported by a global community.
Yes, WordPress gets targeted by hackers. When you’re the most popular, it comes with the territory. But with the right security setup (Ask me, I’m a WordPress professional!), you’ll have nothing to worry about.
Stats Tell a Great Story
Here’s how WordPress is still winning after 22 years:
- Powers over 43% of all websites (that’s almost half the internet!).
- 63.5% CMS market share as of 2023.
- Used by 30% of the world’s top 10 million sites—and 73% of the top 100.
- Almost 60,000 plugins in the official WordPress plugin directory.
Quick tip: Just because there are 59,000 free plugins doesn’t mean you need them all. I’ve seen too many WordPress websites with too many plugins, when a basic setup of essential plugins and a well-documented, professional custom set-up will stand the test of time (Including overenthusiastic web developers).
A Platform for Everyone
I know I’m biased, but WordPress truly did bring web publishing to the masses in my humble opinion. Whether you’re a solo creator, a small business, or a global giant, you can build, manage, and grow your online presence with ease.
I’ve tried numerous CMS, from Joomla, to Drupal, Typo3, to Webflow, and more recently Duda, and Wix. But WordPress is still my top pick for professionalism, support, and sheer versatility. It’s so extensible, and best of all, so familiar after 22 years of using it.
And beyond that, I can help you create content and I’m a WordPress SEO consultant – all thanks to 22 years of using the platform.
What’s Next for WordPress?
As WordPress heads into year 23, it’s not slowing down. Expect more innovation, faster performance, and even more ways to build your dream site. You really can use it for everything from just blogging to an online shop, to a full-on corporate website.
